Everything you see around you involves chemistry in some way and the subject impacts on all aspects of our lives. Chemists provide many of the materials of everyday life, together with the knowledge to improve healthcare and to appreciate and tackle the major environmental problems that face us all. Knowledge of chemistry will give you a greater understanding of the world we live in. It is the study of substances, what they are made of, how they interact and what role they play in living things. Chemistry is all about problem solving, and can be highly creative, for example, when designing new molecules with unique properties. Where would we be without chemistry in the fight against diseases like HIV, Cancer and Ebola. Chemistry is a broad subject that is divided into three strands: organic, physical and inorganic. Together, they will provide you with a wide range of skills. You will become confident in handling potentially harmful chemicals safely as well as understanding and applying mathematical and chemical equations. Chemistry underpins other disciplines, such as Biology and Geology, and it is highly recommended that you undertake it in conjunction with another science such as Biology or Physics, as well as Mathematics. It is an essential subject if you are considering a career in medicine, dentistry or veterinary science.
