This is well suited to students who love reading and thinking about what they have read. You will explore a range of challenging contemporary and classic poetry, prose and drama, from E M Forster to Ian McEwan; from Truman Capote to John Donne. Students develop skills in analysis, essay writing and debating which enable them to construct personal, well reasoned and sophisticated responses to texts. English Literature is an excellent preparation for further study to the most competitive universities and is highly valued by employers. You will learn to discuss texts in historical and social context, drawing on a wide range of critical perspectives. There are significant choices of texts for coursework, and students work with teachers to craft a question related to their interests. You will also have the opportunity for creative writing based on the texts.
