You will learn to analyse and evaluate the ideas of others, develop an inquiring and critical approach to the big questions facing society today and construct your own well-supported arguments. The course provides a philosophical training which will be of use in advanced study in many subjects. Philosophy and Ethics continue today to provide some of the most thought provoking challenges to disciplines such as science, law, politics, psychology and medicine. Up-to-date facts and some legal knowledge are required so you can discuss problems arising in medical, social and political contexts as well as examining the broader theories. Philosophy is comprised of an introduction to the major influences in philosophy including Plato and Aristotle; an examination of the traditional arguments for the existence of God. The use of religious and ethical language, free will and determinism, a philosophical approach to miracles, life after death and the role of the conscience. Ethics is comprised of an examination of major ethical theories and their application to contemporary issues.
