The main ethos of the ABC Level 3 Diploma is to cover 2 qualifications within 1 year. The Yr1 requires the production of 2 welds (Tee Fillet & Single Vee Butt Joint) in the vertical up position (PF) and these must be completed in either MAGS, MMA or TAGS welding processes. The completed welds will be visually and destructive tested to aid you in understanding what is required to produce a sound weld.
The Yr2 qualification is exactly the same, however the welding is completed in the overhead position (PE).
The fabrications for both courses cover a platework unit (3mm and above) and a sheet metal unit (3mm and below). You are issued with engineering drawings to work from and only the complexity of the fabrications increases with course level. You will be required to produce different pattern development drawings in aid to complete the fabrications. The practical work for this course is graded by pass, merit or distinction.
The theory aspect of the ABC Diploma covers knowledge evidence assessment questions (7 units in total, 4 in Yr1 and 3 in Yr2), depending on the unit covered you are required to complete written assessments (ranging from 5 to 8 assessments) and submit them on an online learning platform (Markbook). For Yr1 the Materials, Science and Calculations requires 10 written assessments and an online examination (60% pass rate). For Yr2 there is a Fabrication Processes examination (60% pass rate).
