The Extended Certificate course is equivalent to 1 A level and takes up one option block. The Diploma is a 2 A level course over two option blocks and the Extended Diploma is a 3 A level course and takes up 15 hours (three option blocks) on the timetable.

Students could take up a work placement, usually in Year 13 (arranged by the school) to support their learning on the course.

Teachers will deliver the theory in school and students will be guided through the assessment process. The assessment is a mix of examination and continuous assessment and requires that students manage their time very carefully. Working to deadlines is an important aspect of the course.
