Why choose English Language?

English Language is a subject which is exceptionally well received by universities and employers alike. Good performance at A level provides a very sound base for a surprising number of degrees and professions and helps to develop analytical as well as creative skills.

What does the course involve?

Throughout the first year of studies, students learn to look at language and texts through different concepts and ideas such as power, gender, dialect and occupation. Analysing how language can change through different social prisms is a key factor to AS Level language.

Students will also learn how to write, under timed conditions, with a creative flair fit for a particular audience and purpose.

In Y13 the linguistic skills that have been gained in Y12 are built upon by analysing older texts for language change and diversity. In addition, students will study how children acquire language in response to a piece of data.

Unlike Y12, Y13 has a coursework element where students can apply their knowledge of linguistic methods and concepts to an academic investigation of their own choosing.
