Students with A level English Language have access to a wide range of possible career and Higher Education opportunities. Students who follow the course will develop their independent learning and literacy skills and as well as their ability to think analytically. Written and discussion work throughout the course will encourage students to be effective communicators. As a result this subject is highly useful in preparing students for many careers including Law, Business, the Media, Social Services, Personnel, Marketing Education and further study at Undergraduate level.
This course will appeal to those students who: have an interest in the development of language; wish to discuss and reflect on how language is used within a social context; enjoy exploring different texts and becoming familiar with certain genres; have the ability to work independently or as part of a group.
Unit 1 - Language, the individual and society. this unit develops students ability to analyse texts and demonstrate understanding of linguistic concepts in relation to individuals and society. Students will study a wide range of texts from a range of genres and child language development.
Unit 2 - Language, Diversity and Change. the aim of this unit is to develop students' understanding of concepts of language change and attitudes towards language. Students will study attitudes to language and linguistic theories; language change over time; non-fiction writing skills.
Unit 3 - Language in Action. the aim of this unit is to develop students' independent learning skills as well as their own writing style. the unit is made up of a language investigation into an area of linguistics chosen by the student, a piece of original writing written for a specific audience and purpose of the students' choice.
