Students who follow the course will develop their literature skills ad enhance their powers of critical analysis. Written and discussion work throughout the course will encourage students to become effective and persuasive communicators. As a result this subject is fundamental in preparing students for many careers including Law, Business, the Media, Social Services, Education, Personnel and Marketing as well as further study at Undergraduate level.
This course will appeal to those students who: are avid readers and enjoy reading and analysing a wide variety of texts from different genres and authors; have an interest in researching the cultural and historical influences which have shaped the writing and reception of literary texts; enjoy discussing and reflecting on their studies with their peers.
Unit 1 - Love Through the Ages (Exam) The aim of this unit is to develop studentsƒ?? ability to analyse and compare literary texts linked by the theme of love. Students will study: A Shakespeare play; An anthology of poetry; A novel. This unit will be assessed in an exam where students will be asked to analyse and comment upon the texts. Students will also analyse an unseen poem.
Unit 2 WW1 and it's Aftermath (Exam) the aim of this unit is to develop students' ability to analyse literary texts written about WW1. In preparation for this students will study:a collection of war poetry; a play; a novel.
Unit 3 - Independent Critical Study (Coursework) The aim of this unit is to develop students' ability to investigate and explore language and literature which is of particular interest to them. Students will choose a theme and explore how it is presented in two literary texts of their choice from different genres and time periods. this unit will be assessed as a coursework piece of arounf 2500 words and will be internally marked then moderated.
