As well as being a qualification to continue to study history at degree level, the skills acquired through the study of history are very much in demand. History is a good training for administration and large numbers of history graduates go on to posts in management requiring leadership. Many work in publishing, journalism and broadcasting, industry and commerce. You can also take specialist careers in teaching, museum work, archive conservation and library work.
On this course you will have the opportunity to study aspects of both British and European History. You will explore historical themes and concepts and you will learn how to think and write from a historical perspective. This course will appeal to those students who: are interested in History; who want to develop their analytical and research skills; who wish to pursue careers in areas such as education, law, journalism and banking.
Units of Study: Unit 1 - British Period Study and Equiry. the study will be Britain 1930-1997. At the end of the unit candidates will be externally assessed in a one hour and thirty minutes examination using source material on Winston Churchill. It is worth 25% of the total mark at A level.
Unit 2 - Non British Study. The area studied will be Democracy and dictatorships in Germany 1919-1963. Students will be externally assessed at the end of the course. The assessment will be one hour long. It is work 15% of the total mark at A level.
Unit 3- Thematic Study and Historical Interpretations. This is an essay based exam. The theme students will study over a period of 200 years is the Origins of the British Empire 1558-1783. The topic is externally assessed in a two hour and thirty minute examination. the study is worth 40% of the total A level examination.
Topic Based Essay. Candidates will complete a 3000-4000 word essay on a topic of their choice. It is internally assessed and is worth 20% of the total A level marks.
