In Year 12, our students will study the reigns of the first two Tudor kings – King Henry VII (r.1485-1509) and King Henry VIII (r.1509-1547). In particular, students will consider how, and how successfully, King Henry VII was able to consolidate the Tudor dynasty when confronted with an array of threats and challenges to his reign. Our students will go on to compare and contrast the approach to monarchy adopted by his son from 1509. An important focus of the study of Henry VIII’s reign is the notorious ‘break with Rome’ and the wide-ranging repercussions this had on the power of the monarch, religion in England, stability in English society, and England’s relations with foreign powers.
