The GCE in Graphic Communication would suit students who have taken Art, Applied Art GCSE or level 2 BTEC in Art and Design and wish to pursue a career in Graphic Design. Graphic communication conveys information and ideas through visual means. The critical element for a graphic designer is the effective communication of a message or idea through the organisation of images and words. The scope of graphic communication has been extended through the growth of design applications in the home and in public and through the development of the internet. Graphic designers need to understand user and audience needs and how these groups respond to various forms of visual communication; as well as how changes to working practices lead to new forms of communication and presentation. A2 consists of two units: Unit 1 incorporates three major elements: supporting studies, practical work and a personal study , based on the student's own choice of subject. Supporting studies and practical work will comprise a portfolio of development work and outcomes based on themes and ideas developed from personal starting points. Unit 2 is an externally set assignment that enables students to pursue and develop their own personal style.
