A one year programme of study designed to prepare you for a career in one of the UKs most vital industries and agricultural food production. You will study a range of topic areas, where dependant on learner numbers there may be the opportunity to specialise in a livestock management or crop mechanisation in the final year of study. During the course you will attend a
range of lectures; these are followed by practical sessions, where you can put theory into practice and vice-versa. Topics studied are a range of Livestock husbandry units (Beef, Dairy, Sheep), Crop Production (Arable, Grassland, Root and Field Veg) Science (Animal, Soil and Plant) Business, Mechanisation, Estate Skills and an Investigational Project. Work experience is considered a vital element of the programme and you will be required to undertake 1 day per week of the course. It is envisaged that learners will spend some time at our
partner colleges farms in Newton Rigg to study upland and lowland management topics, farming in both high and low rainfall areas and the contrasts between farming in Cumbria and the Vale of York. You would normally study the L3 Advanced Technical Diploma (540) in year 1, and progress to the L3 Advanced Technical Extended Diploma (1080) in year 2.Progression routes from the programme can include Foundation Degree study leading to BSc honours degree Agriculture.
